The Sing’isi Pottery Center, near Arusha, Tanzania, is currently under construction. The main focus of the Sing’isi Pottery Centre is to teach and create functional pottery that can be offered on the world market. The project team at Sing’isi is comprised of two master potters and three teachers from the Sing’isi Primary and Vocational School, all local Tanzanians. The U.S. project team is an all volunteer group.
The goal of the Sing’isi Pottery Project is to create a self-sustaining pottery program that will teach the making, glazing and firing of functional pottery; sell pottery production by-products and services to the local community; and, market the pottery products to the local tourists and the world market. This income generating opportunity will enable the people of this developing country to build self-reliance and empower them to care for their families and communities. Additionally, by working along side the grassroots people, the door is open to teaching other critical skills for maintaining health and the environment, supporting the one world philosophy.
The Sing’isi Pottery Project joined African Community Enterprise in February of 2006. All monies raised will go toward building the facilities, purchasing equipment and supplies, paying the teachers, and volunteers expenses. Experience and knowledge gained here will be transferred to livelihood development projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo and support the conservation efforts of BCI in the Congo basin. A major fundraiser is planned for May 24, 2006, in Atlanta, Georgia.
